The New York Mets seem like they won’t be bringing back their superstar slugger, Pete Alonso, who declared for free agency this offseason. However, there may be a condition that if Alonso accepts, the Mets would work vigorously to get him back.

According to Fansided’s Zachary Rotman, that condition is that Alonso shifts to DH as his primary position. As a first baseman, where Alonso primarily played for his entire career, his defense has been less than to be desired.

“Immediately after the New York Mets completed their collapse, David Stearns made it abundantly clear that the team would prioritize improving its run prevention this offseason. Not only does this mean improving the pitching staff, but it also means improving their team defense. First base defense might not be as important as other positions, but again, Alonso was one of the worst defenders at his position in 2025. Replacing him with a better defensive option would undoubtedly improve their run prevention. If Alonso is willing to DH more, though, that might make him more appealing to Stearns. The Mets do not currently have a clear-cut DH on their roster, so the Mets could easily re-sign Alonso and find someone else to play some first base, too,” Rotman wrote.

This past season, Alonso slashed .272/.347/.524/.871 with 41 doubles, 38 home runs, and 126 RBI in 162 games played. His value as an offensive player definitely outweighs his defensive weaknesses, so if the Mets can make him DH, it makes total sense to keep him.

Hopefully, the Mets broach this subject soon with Alonso’s camp. It’s better to get it done quickly before other contenders who want Alonso’s power come looking around.
