The Toronto Blue Jays had to let Max Scherzer go this offseason, and while he can still give good results in certain moments like game 7 of the World Series, he has struggle mightily over the course of a season, and Tim Kelly of Bleacher Report has labeled him a bust for this year’s free agency.

Max Scherzer is labelled bust for free agency

Scherzer turned 41 years old and it seems he doesn’t have much left in the tank to offer a franchise. Which is why he was given the bust status. Kelly had this to say about him.

“Man, it was cool watching Max Scherzer turn back the clock in the postseason and take down meaningful innings for a Toronto Blue Jays team that nearly won the World Series. That doesn’t mean, however, that he’s a wise bet moving forward.”-Kelly

In the postseason Scherzer was actually really good as he managed a 3.77 ERA in 14 innings, and his most famous moment came when he demanded John Schneider to leave him in the game. Throughout the whole season those numbers weren’t nearly as good, which is why teams should be cautious before signing him.

“Scherzer had a 5-5 record with a 5.19 ERA in 85 innings pitched. In a stat that might sound shocking, Scherzer’s 5.19 ERA was the highest in his career for a single season. That says a lot given the fact Scherzer has pitched in MLB since 2008.”-Ferraro

Not only did he not perform well, he did not start very much either. He didn’t offer quantity or quality, which begs the question why would anyone sign him at all? If teams are only going to base it off his psotseason outings, then they better have a really good existing rotation already, where he can slide into the 5th slot with no pressure. Either way it’s a big risk to sign him.
