The Toronto Blue Jays have been active in MLB free agency as they look to strengthen the roster for 2026. Fresh off their first World Series appearance in more than three decades, the Blue Jays are aiming to remain the team to beat in the American League.

After shoring up the rotation, Toronto’s front office turned its attention to the bullpen, officially announcing on Monday the signing of right-handed reliever Tyler Rogers to a three-year, $37 million deal. It is unclear whether Rogers will serve as the closer, but he is expected to be a reliable presence in high-leverage situations next season.
The 34-year-old veteran features a distinctive submarine delivery, one of the lowest release points in the league, making his pitches extremely difficult to track out of his hand. In 81 games last season between the San Francisco Giants and New York Mets, Rogers posted a 1.98 ERA across 77 1/3 innings, striking out 48 batters while providing steady production.
With Rogers officially added to the 40-man roster on Monday, the move came with a cost. The Blue Jays had to clear a spot on the full roster, which led to left-handed reliever Justin Bruihl being designated for assignment. “ROSTER MOVES: 🔹 LHP Justin Bruihl designated for assignment,” the team announced on X.
Being designated for assignment means Bruihl was removed from the 40-man roster. The Blue Jays now have a short window, usually seven days, to decide what happens next. They can trade him or place him on waivers where other teams have the chance to claim him. If he clears waivers, he could be sent to the minors, but his future with Toronto remains uncertain.

Bruihl’s first season with the Blue Jays came in 2025, marking his fifth year in MLB. He appeared in 15 games, recording a 5.27 ERA with 18 strikeouts across 13 2/3 innings. The Blue Jays trusted him enough to include him on the ALDS roster against the New York Yankees, though his lone appearance resulted in two runs allowed.
While Bruihl offered depth, his performance underscored the need for more stability in the bullpen. Rogers provides exactly that, bringing durability, consistency and a proven track record in high-leverage spots. For a contender like Toronto, his addition represents a clear upgrade.
