One of the Boston Red Sox’ main goals this offseason is to find a No. 2 pitcher to pair with their Cy Young runner-up, Garrett Crochet. Fortunately, there is a trade target that could work for them.

Fansided’s Christopher Kline believes that two-time Cy Young Winner Jacob deGrom would be a perfect fit for the Red Sox and that he could be a valuable leader and mentor in the clubhouse.

“Craig Breslow has laid bare his intention to pursue top starters to pair with Garrett Crochet atop the rotation. He won’t have many better options than deGrom, who brings over a decade of sensational results to the table. His experience as a right-handed ace could pair nicely with a more green lefty in Crochet, giving the Boston Red Sox both a productive second ace and a valuable leader in the clubhouse. Boston has proved its willingness to spend on the right fit. Alex Bregman netted three years, $120 million last winter. deGrom is owed $95 million over the final three years of his deal, and that’s assuming the 2028 club option gets picked up. deGrom is within their price range, especially if Bregman walks as a free agent,” Kline wrote.

This past season, deGrom posted a 12-8 record, a 2.97 ERA, 185 Ks, and a 0.921 WHIP over 172 innings pitched. He would be a solid No. 2, and if Crochet were to ever be injured and miss time, deGrom would be a fine ace.

deGrom also only has two years left on his contract, with a club option for a third. More than likely, the Sox would keep him for those two years, and then decline the club option in favor of letting one of their rising stars have the starting spot.

Hopefully,  the Red Sox will at least look into this possible trade. While others are better, if all else fails, this is something they should consider.
