The SF Giants swung a minor trade to acquire power-hitting outfielder Joey Wiemer. That now gives them at least 10 outfielders on the 40-man roster. Where does Wiemer fit on the outfield depth chart?

I say at least 10 outfielders because Tyler Fitzgerald and Christian Koss are primarily infielders, but both have pro experience in the outfield as well. In fact, the Giants briefly revisited that idea with Fitzgerald in 2025.

Wiemer joins a crowded outfield mix, but with few players that have separated themselves from the crowd. Heliot Ramos and Jung Hoo Lee are the incumbents at left field and right field, respectively. Barring a surprise move, they will be two-thirds of the outfield contingent heading into 2026.

Drew Gilbert and Grant McCray have the defensive acumen and speed, but both leave something to be desired offensively. That profile could still lend itself to a fourth outfield role.

Jerar Encarnación, Luis Matos, and Marco Luciano are out of options, so their respective spots on the depth chart are tenuous. All are bat-first options, but without the track record of hitting against major league pitching.

Justin Dean and Wade Meckler are behind the rest of the group. Dean brings speed, and Meckler offers good contact skills.

If the outfield depth chart was being drawn up today, Joey Wiemer likely slots in right behind Heliot Ramos and Jung Hoo Lee. He has the speed and arm to fill all three outfield positions. Wiemer grades out as an above-average defensive outfielder in the corners, and passable in center field.

Offensively, he brings modest power upside, even if it is in a platoon role. Across three major league seasons, he has posted a .638 OPS. That is not good enough for an everyday role, but includes a .779 OPS against left-handed pitching. The Giants likely will not go back to platooning as aggressively as they did a few seasons ago, but it is still a strategy every team employs to some degree.

That type of leverage will get Wiemer’s name in the lineup against those matchups. Coincidentally, it was also an area where the Giants massively struggled in 2025.

While the trade for Wiemer was viewed as a minor mover, there is a path to a role on the club in 2026. This is true even they make a notable addition to the outfield.
