The San Francisco Giants are expected to be one of the more active teams in free agency, but there are some major hurdles the club has to climb when it comes to big contracts.

Matt Chapman, Willy Adames, and Rafael Devers are costing the team a lot, making their pursuit of the top free agents a challenge.

Unfortunately for Giants fans, a recent report from Jim Bowden of The Athletic reveals that the Giants, instead of pursuing Kyle Tucker, will be looking elsewhere this winter.

Giants expected to pursue non-Kyle Tucker free agents in offseason

“I also think the Giants and Phillies would be great fits (for Kyle Tucker),” Bowden writes, “but it sounds like the Giants are directing their money toward pitching…”

Adding a superstar like Kyle Tucker would be an amazing addition for the Giants, but despite the open outfield spot and the need, they aren’t expected to pursue Tucker heavily.

Instead, the Giants are expected to go after pitching. There are a few reasons why pitching is a priority, and it can be clearly seen by the pitchers that the Giants lost in 2025, and who are not coming back for 2026.

Justin Verlander could depart in free agency, leaving Logan Webb, Robbie Ray, and Landen Roup as the team’s primary starting pitchers. While a few others had started this season, the rotation is the biggest area of need.

Kyle Harrison and Jordan Hicks were traded to the Boston Red Sox for Devers, and Camilo Doval was dealt to the New York Yankees.

Whether it’s in the rotation or in the bullpen, the Giants’ biggest need this winter is pitching, not hitting. Tucker would be an awesome pickup, but with Heliot Ramos and Jung Hoo Lee in the outfield, with Devers at DH, the offense is just fine in San Francisco.

While the Giants could be an interesting fit for Tucker, this report from Bowden suggests that Buster Posey and the front office are instead scouring the free agent and trade markets for pitching.
