Caleb Durbin, third baseman

Who could have guessed that the most impactful player in the Devin Williams-Nestor Cortes/Durbin trade would wind up being Durbin? But he was, accounting for 2.6 FanGraphs Wins Above Replacement in 136 games and earning a third-place finish in National League rookie of the year voting. Built like a fire hydrant, the 25-year-old hit a solid .256 with 11 homers and 53 runs batted in, compiled an on-base plus slugging of .721 and stole 18 bases – not too shabby for his first major-league experience. He didn’t walk but also didn’t strike out
(98th percentile), didn’t swing and miss (96th percentile whiff rate) and almost always squared balls up (95th percentile). Oh, and Durbin also was hit by 24
pitches to lead the National League. Defensively, Durbin accounted for five defensive runs saved at third base, displaying a quick and accurate throwing arm. Quite the acquisition. Grade: B.
