2025 Season Overview: Patience is key for rookies in the WNBA. And for Maddy Westbeld patience – and preparation – paid off for her first year in a Sky uniform.
Westbeld was one of two Chicago draft picks in this year’s draft, as the team selected her in the second round, No. 16 overall. Coming off a career at Notre Dame, Westbeld looked to bring her versatility as a forward and shooter beyond the arc to the next level.

In her 26 appearances this season, she averaged 4.1 points and 2.4 rebounds in 13.6 minutes per game. Westbeld finished the season third among all rookies in three-point percentage shooting an efficient 39.5% from beyond the arc.
Westbeld stayed ready all season long and it resulted in her best performances coming with a breakout month in September. In the Sky’s final game on Sept. 11, she scored a career-high 25 points along with seven rebounds and three assists, while shooting 66.7% from the field. Her seven boards tied her career high, which she achieved earlier in the season on July 16.
In September she averaged 9.0 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 19.7 minutes. She was efficient shooting as she averaged 43.8% from the field and 53.3% from three-point. Her 53.3% from deep was second-best among all rookies for the month of September.
“I’ve really been working this season, every single day,” Westbeld said after her career-high. “Some days showed, some days it didn’t and I just stuck to the process. I’m just really, really grateful to do it with the girls next to me. They made my first season memorable.”
Westbeld’s growth throughout the season will prove to be important as the Sky move forward into next year. Her versatility and size will allow her to be another threat, along with the developing talent the Sky have, as she continues to evolve into her sophomore year.
