Inside the Blue Jays’ surprising backup plan if Bo Bichette moves on.ht

Picture backgroundThe Toronto Blue Jays have been clear over and over again that they would like to have Bo Bichette back as a member of the organization in 2026 and beyond.

But, baseball is a business. He’s a free agent and every team out there has a shot at him if the money is right. He’s just 27 years old and is a two-time All-Star. Realistically, any team with a hole in the infield should be calling him right now. He’s that good. If he does opt to leave, there will be other options out there, but none are at the same level as Bichette.

For example, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon reported that the Blue Jays could enter the market for All-Star infielder Jorge Polanco if Bichette ends up walking.

“The beauty of the Seattle Mariners is that they need not rely solely on free agents such as first baseman Josh Naylor, whom they re-signed Monday to a five-year, $92.5 million deal, or second baseman Jorge Polanco, who remains on their wish list,” Rosenthal and Sammon wrote. ” … Polanco, 32, still would fit nicely, serving mostly as a designated hitter to protect his health but also playing second on days the Mariners want to use Cal Raleigh at DH. But Polanco, according to major-league sources, wants to play out the market. The Boston Red Sox might want him if they lose third baseman Alex Bregman, the Toronto Blue Jays might if they lose Bo Bichette. And those are just two possibilities.”

Polanco is a very talented hitter. He had 26 homers and 78 RBIs in 2025 in 138 game, but he’s also 32 years old. If the Blue Jays sign him, they could play him at second base and Andrés Giménez at shortstop. It would be a solid infield, but not the same. Toronto should be doing everything possible to make a deal work with Bichette.
