When counting down the top plays of 2025, there is one that is played on a continuous loop for the Toronto Blue Jays.

Daulton Varsho's behind-the-back catch
On April 30, in a game against the division rival Boston Red SoxDaulton Varsho did something absolutely ridiculous. With Jarren Duran batting and Dillon Tate on the mound, Varsho tripped on the warning track chasing down Duran’s long fly ball.
On his knees and with his eyes facing the centre field wall, Varsho put his glove behind him an somehow caught the baseball.
Top Plays of 2025: No. 9

Daulton Varsho’s amazing recovery leads to one of the most UNBELIEVABLE catches you’ll ever see!

It was a play that stunned everybody. The Red Sox’ NESN announcers were in disbelief. On the Blue Jays side, Dan Shulman and Joe Siddall were reduced to sheepish laughter.
On the mound, Tate threw his arms up in the air, a combination of shock and celebration.
Now, that catch has made Major League Baseball’s list of top 10 plays of the year, coming in at number nine.
Even for Blue Jays fans who are used to Varsho’s superhuman, Gold-glove winning plays, this was on another level.
The fact that it was his first game back from injury – and thus season debut – makes it even more remarkable.

Varsho no stranger to great plays

But it does beg the question. If that catch is number nine, what could possibly be number one?
