One of the key priorities for the Toronto Blue Jays this offseason is to re-sign star shortstop Bo Bichette to a long-term deal, in order to keep the main core intact for years to come. After all, there aren’t many other options available in the free agent market that would even come close to the value that Bichette brings with respect to the position he plays.
However, re-signing Bo may have become more of a challenge now, as a division rival has entered the conversation in pursuit of the Blue Jays’ home grown star. The Boston Red Sox have now shown interest in Bichette, according to Red Sox insider Rob Bradford.
Are the Blue Jays about to enter a battle with a division rival for their home grown star?
That is definitely some worrisome news for the Blue Jays and their fanbase. After all, the Red Sox had risen back to relevance in 2025 after failing to make the playoffs in their previous three seasons. With their roster revamped with young blooming stars such as Roman Anthony, and Kristian Campbell, any potential elite additions would make them even stronger. Being able to land Bichette would certainly fit that criteria, creating a potential nightmare scenario for the Blue Jays going forward.
More significantly, the Red Sox have been known in the past for being willing to spend on big free agents, as well as making the big trade whenever possible. Last year, Boston added the likes of Alex Bregman and Aroldis Chapman through free agency and Crochet via a trade with the Chicago White Sox. As a result, getting into a bidding war with their division rival could be disastrous for the Blue Jays, as they still have other needs to address such as pitching this offseason.
Nevertheless, losing Bichette could potentially be detrimental offensively for Toronto, since the 27-year-old infielder has been perhaps the best pure hitter on the team since making his debut with the club in 2019. With a career .294 batting average, .806 OPS, while averaging more than 90 runs scored, 20 home runs and 90 RBIs per season, Bichette’s elite offensive production would be hard to replace even with two hitters, let alone one. In addition, he has been an All-Star twice, along with leading the American League in hits on two occasions as well.

More importantly, the chemistry, camaraderie and leadership that he has helped bring to the Blue Jays group has enabled the team to believe in each other and put everything on the line for each other. As a result, even with the pressure from the Red Sox and most likely many others from around the league as well, the Blue Jays should do all they can to reel Bichette back in from the free agent market as soon as possible before it’s too late.
