The Toronto Blue Jays are expected to be big players in free agency this winter. They have been linked to several players who all provide something special. Kyle Tucker, Pete Fairbanks, and Devin Williams have all been linked to Toronto in one way or another.
However, one Blue Jays pitcher has just been linked to a new team. Chris Bassitt has been connected to a new team, and, considering his history, the New York Mets stand a good chance of acquiring him.
Chris Bassitt Linked to New York Mets
There is a new report linking Bassitt to the Mets. Gotham Baseball, run by Mark C. Healey, has heard that the Mets are interested in Bassitt.
“Heard Mets could be interested in a reunion with Chris Bassitt,” Healey wrote on November 18, 2025. “Not what you want to hear, but worth mentioning.”
If it’s a detail worth mentioning, there is at least some substance behind the rumor. Let us not forget that interest in a player does not equal a contract, signed, sealed, and delivered. However, it’s notable that there is interest from the other New York team.
In March of 2022, the Mets traded for Bassitt, as per Joel Sherman. He played one season for them, striking out 167 batters in 181 innings over 30 starts while posting a 3.42 ERA.
Bassitt played three seasons for the Blue Jays, starting at least 30 games in each one. In 2025, he finished with 31 starts, 11 quality starts, one complete game, and 166 strikeouts, along with a 1.33 WHIP and a 3.96 ERA over 170 1/3 total innings.
Other Bassitt Free Agency Predictions
The predictions for Bassitt’s eventual landing spot in free agency are varied. Of course, there is a lot up in the air; some of it is in the player’s control, but most of it isn’t.
Wherever he ends up, Jeff Passan believes he will bring veteran leadership and solid production from the mound.
“Chris Bassitt, right-handed starter: Bassitt is a pro’s pro, a 36-year-old who didn’t spend one second bellyaching about whether he should be in the Blue Jays’ rotation come October,” Passan wrote for TSN on November 18, 2025. “Toronto needed him out of the bullpen; he said OK — and proceeded to give up only one run in 8⅔ innings with 10 strikeouts. Wherever he winds up, he’s the ideal candidate to play veteran leader while still booking productive numbers.”
Over at MLBTradeRumors, the site offered predictions for this class of free agents. The New York Yankees, Atlanta Braves, and Oakland Athletics were three teams that are seen as potential landing spots for the 36-year-old. They also predicted that a two-year, $38 million contract is in order for the pitching workhorse.
Elsewhere, The Athletic is aiming a little higher, bookmarking Bassitt for a two-year, $46 million payday.
The Case for the Blue Jays to Bring Bassitt Back
There is a case to be made for the Blue Jays to run it back with Bassitt. Recently, one MLB analyst reasoned that Toronto should do precisely that.
Nick Prasad of BlueJaysNation argued that Bassitt’s consistency during his tenure with the Blue Jays, combined with his postseason performance, warrants a new contract.
“In a nutshell, the Blue Jays should not completely change the wheel if it is not broken,” Prasad wrote on November 17, 2025. “The team advanced all the way to the World Series, with contributions from the majority of their active players. Bassitt was a huge part of the mix.”
“The ability for Bassitt to be plugged into key situations during the 2025 postseason was crucial for John Schneider and the Blue Jays bullpen.”
One way or another, Bassitt isn’t finished playing baseball. The only real question that remains is whether he’s done playing baseball for the Blue Jays or not.
If any of these rumors or predictions are to be believed, his time with Toronto has come to an end.
