The New York Yankees are even losing players most of their fans have never heard of to the New York Mets.

This one is a big loss, too.

MLB teams usually have their international free agent signings lined up well in advance of when players turn 16 and are actually eligible to sign.

The Yankees had top Dominican shortstop prospect Wandy Asigen lined up to sign on Jan. 15, 2026.

But the Mets have swooped in.

This is what MLB insider Francys Romero reported on X on Thursday night:

“Hearing that Dominican shortstop prospect Wandy Asigen has opted out of his contract with the New York Yankees and has agreed to sign with the New York Mets for around $3.8 million when the new international signing period opens on January 15, 2026.”

On MLB Pipeline, Asigen is listed with 65 hit tool (out of 80), 60 power, 60 run, 50 arm and 55 field. Rarely do players his age have such great potential across the board.

Of course, a guy like Asigen is also a long way from the majors. Players near the top of the international signing class every year end up not making it to the bigs at all.

But sometimes, the guys that everyone expects to be good are indeed good.

If that’s the case for Asigen, it’ll be a tough loss for the Yankees to let the Mets get him instead.
