She’s only been in the WNBL for a short time but already Mackenzie Holmes is making a big impact in her first professional season overseas.

Holmes, who was drafted by the Seattle Storm at pick 26 in the 2024 WNBA Draft, is the WNBL’s leading scorer, sparking a run of form for the rising Geelong Venom and joined basketball.com.au‘s Bec Cole to talk all about it on the latest edition of ‘It’s a Cole World’.

The 25-year-old arrived in Australia with a basketball resume already filled with success, following an impressive college career at Indiana University – otherwise known as the Hoosiers.

As part of her outstanding collegiate career, Holmes became the school’s all-time leading scorer after finishing her five seasons with 2530 points. Her list of achievements also include winning the 2023 Big 10 Defensive Player of the Year as well as leading her team to the Big 10 title and the most wins in program history.

She then went onto the WNBA but faced some immediate adversity, missing her first season due to knee surgery, but bounced back in 2025 to play 10 games for Seattle, alongside Australian Opal Ezi Magbegor.

Holmes was then signed by the Venom to be part of a star core, featuring WNBA Draft pick Shyla Heal, Jazmin Shelley and fellow WNBA big Alissa Pili. But with Heal and Pili missing most of Geelong’s game to start the season, Holmes has taken over, averaging 24.4 points per game to lead the league and have her team in a good spot with Heal and Pili both close to a return.
