Sevgi Uzun, the second Turkish woman to play in the WNBA after Nevriye Yılmaz, said, “Hopefully, after winning the league in Türkiye, we will win the European League championship once again. My biggest dream right now is to go to the WNBA as a European champion.”
Sevgi Uzun, who earned the right to play in the Women’s American Basketball League (WNBA) thanks to her performance with Fenerbahçe Alagöz Holding, achieved her dreams in a short time.

The 26-year-old basketball player of the yellow-blue team had said in 2021, while playing for OGM Ormanspor, “I have a WNBA dream. I need to do everything step by step.”
Sevgi Uzun, who achieved this dream in 3 years, shared her feelings.
Sevgi, who will be the second Turkish woman basketball player to play in the WNBA after Nevriye Yılmaz, expressed that she is very happy.
Sevgi, the first Turk to go to the WNBA in almost 20 years, said, “I am very happy. I have received great support since it was announced. I will go to the WNBA, which I have dreamed of. Every decision I have made has had an impact on me reaching this point. The seasons I spent at OGM Ormanspor and BOTAŞ after leaving Fenerbahçe were very valuable. Then I returned to Fenerbahçe. We are having a very good season. I want to go to the WNBA by winning championships again with Fenerbahçe.”
HER NEW DREAM IS TO GO TO THE WNBA BY WINNING THE EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP
Sevgi Uzun’s new goal is to go to the WNBA by winning the league championship and then the second consecutive European League championship with Fenerbahçe Alagöz Holding.
Sevgi, recalling her return to the yellow-blue team last season after a two-year absence and her first EuroLeague championship, stated, “We’re going through a very good period. First, we want to win the league in Türkiye. Everyone in the team loves each other very much. Hopefully, after winning the league in Türkiye, we will achieve the EuroLeague championship once again. My biggest dream right now is to go to the WNBA as the European champion.”
“I HOPE I CAN BE A ROLE MODEL FOR ALL GIRLS”
Sevgi Uzun expressed her desire to be a role model for girls.
Emphasizing that women’s basketball is experiencing a resurgence in Türkiye, Sevgi said, “I hope I can be a role model for all girls. I think there are many names in Turkish basketball who can do this. We are slowly showing our strength. We are also in a resurgence phase in the national team. We have experienced a generational change. All of our young players are incredibly talented. I think we will be successful.”
The successful basketball player also addressed families, saying, “I urge girls and their families not to stop watching us. We try to be an inspiration to them. I work to make them say, ‘We want to be like her.’ I also appeal to their families to support their children in starting sports.”
