Yankees spark league-wide shock as they quietly chase the Rangers’ $325 million superstar in a massive blockbuster move. lt

The New York Yankees have checked in with the Texas Rangers about All-Star shortstop Corey Seager, per the Dallas Morning News’ Evan Grant.

Seager, 31, joined the Rangers ahead of the 2022 season following seven successful seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and continued to thrive after switching to the American League. With the Rangers, Seager has made three All-Star Games and won a World Series — his second.

Through his four seasons in Texas, Seager has slashed .278/.355/.517 with 117 home runs and 303 RBIs. He finished runner-up in 2023 AL MVP voting, when he posted a 7.2-bWAR season with 33 home runs and 96 RBIs.

Now, though, the Rangers are showing interest in unloading some of their more expensive assets, as they have already traded Marcus Semien and non-tendered Adolis Garcia this offseason.

Seager has six years remaining on his $325 million contract, and the Yankees are more than capable of handling the financial end of his deal.

New York had some issues at shortstop this past season, as Anthony Volpe severely underperformed both with the bat and in the field. He batted .212 in 2025, though he still managed 19 homers and 72 RBIs. Despite that, he finished the season with an 83 OPS+ — well below league average.

Volpe’s defensive numbers also had a stark drop off from 2024, as he finished the year with a minus-6 outs above average after finishing last year with a plus-13 mark — placing him in the top three percent of fielders in 2024.

Seager has finished as an above-average fielder for the past couple of years, and could provide some help for Volpe at shortstop if he is to move away from the left side of the infield and into a utility role, which manager Aaron Boone alluded to earlier in the offseason.

“Oh yeah,” Boone said when asked if Jose Caballero would take some of Volpe’s reps at shortstop next season. “I feel like with Caballero, we’re in much better position there that we have like a premium guy over there that can handle the position and do things. So yeah.”
