⚡ LATEST UPDATE: Max Muncy’s 2025 season in review spotlights the milestones and missteps that defined a pivotal year in his career ⚡.vt

“Max Muncy? Could you be more specific? Ah, the infielder drafted by the A’s? Could you be more specific? Ah, the one born on August 25th? Could you be more specific?” So many Max Muncys, so little time. But we have some time so let’s talk about the younger one who still plays for the A’s…

How Was He Acquired?

The A’s made Muncy their 1st round pick, 25th overall, in 2021 out of Thousand Oaks high school where he was the team’s shortstop and Jacob Wilson was the 3Bman. Muncy was always young for his leagues as he climbed the minor league ladder and debuted with the A’s in 2025 at age 22 as their Opening Day 2Bman.

What Were The Expectations?

Blessed to live out a life long dream and thankful for everyone who helped me get here. All glory to the man above. Go A's

What was expected of Muncy depends a lot on what you thought of him. Muncy is a somewhat polarizing prospect with 1st round pedigree, good bat speed (73rd percentile with the A’s), raw power and the reputation of being a hard worker open to coaching. He also has limited range and an erratic throwing arm, and a fair amount of swing and miss in his game.

Thrust into the starting 2B role when Zack Gelof hit the IL late in spring training, Muncy was being asked to play a fairly unfamiliar position while learning to hit big league pitching at an age where most prospects are still at AA. So the expectatations, or hopes, were probably that Muncy survive and hold his own on the way to a better showing in 2026.

2025 Results

Results were decidedly mixed. Muncy struggled considerably at 2B, posting – 3 DRS and -4 OAA in just 185 innings. At the plate, Muncy’s first stint was a disaster as he batted .176/.211/.279 with a near 30% K rate before being optioned to AAA.

However, upon his return Muncy showed signs of life and took over 3B where his defense not only rated better but showed improvement over time. His bat also came around, jumping from 30 wRC+ in his maiden voyage to 81 wRC+ in June and then 119 wRC+ in July.

Then on July 21st Muncy was hit in the hand by a pitch, right as he was gaining momentum both at the plate and in the field. He returned at the very end of the season for a handful of at bats, but his season was effectively aborted in July.

In the AFL season recently completed Muncy played exclusively at 3B, suggestion both that the A’s view 3B as Muncy’s best path moving forward and that the A’s pursuits this off-season likely will revolve around 2B. Right now Muncy would be the favorite to start Opening Day 2026 at 3B, though there is still quite a bit of off-season remaining.

How high or low are you on Muncy as a potential every day starter (and if so where) or as a super utility infielder? It’s unclear right now whether the A’s think his best value comes from playing 3B every day, backing up 2B/SS/3B, or as trade bait, and to what extent they believe in Muncy as a key piece of the current core. How would you play it with Muncy if you were in charge?
