Sources say the Red Sox are poised to land one of two top free agents, shaking up the offseason race. lt

he Boston Red Sox can target several free-agent position players to fortify their lineup. An MLB insider doesn’t expect them to leave the offseason empty-handed.

MLB Network’s Jon Morosi said Monday on “Hot Stove” that bringing back Alex Bregman is a “big priority” for Boston. If the All-Star third baseman signs elsewhere, Morosi sees the Red Sox pivoting to another corner infielder.

“I look at this as being a two-track possibility for the Boston Red Sox,” Morosi said. “Either they bring back Bregman, or they make an all-out pursuit for Pete Alonso. I like their chances to get one or the other.”

Morosi anticipates the Red Sox signing a big bat, but he could then see them pursuing an impact starting pitcher on the trade market. He added that Boston may try to acquire Edward Cabrera or Sandy Alcántara in a trade from the Miami Marlins.

Furthermore, the Red Sox may have indirectly bolstered their chances of landing Alonso with a blockbuster midseason move. Morosi thinks the San Francisco Giants are no longer a likely suitor for the first baseman after acquiring Rafael Devers.

“I believe the Red Sox are the strongest contender of anyone to take Pete Alonso away from the New York Mets,” Morosi said. “There was conversation in the past about potentially Alonso going to the Giants last offseason, but I don’t see that as being a strong possibility any longer.”

Of course, Bregman and Alonso are hardly similar players. While Bregman is a career .272/.365/.481 hitter who consistently produces above-average offense with a stout glove, Alonso would deliver a significant power boost after crushing 38 home runs for the New York Mets last season.
