Craig Breslow reveals the Red Sox’s top offseason priority and what it means for the team’s future. lt

he Boston Red Sox have made steady improvements to their roster this offseason, though there’s no doubt about where there focus has been.

Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow started the offseason by making marginal trades to acquire catchers Luke Heyman and Ronny Hernandez, infielder Tristan Grey and outfielder Braiden Ward, but no one is expected that quartet to make any sort of difference in 2025. Boston has since received pretty substantial reinforcements in the starting rotation in the form Sonny Gray and Johan Oviedo, who were acquired via trade with the St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates, respectively.

Breslow discussed how things have/haven’t changed given his lopsided focus during the early portion of the offseason in an interview with MassLive’s Chris Cotillo on Friday.

“Our priorities remain improving our 2026 roster,” Breslow said. “We have to be open-minded about the ways we can do that, and practical in the sense that we have some position player needs that we’ll want to focus on.”

The Red Sox are still in desperate need of that middle-of-the-order bat everyone was talking about coming into the offseason, while they also need to figure out whether they’re going to retain or replace Alex Bregman.

It’ll be interesting to see if they check all of those boxes, and if they do, how exactly they go about doing it.
