Few teams have been connected to free agent outfielder Kyle Tucker as much as the Toronto Blue Jays this offseason.
Toronto has proven over the last few years that they aren’t afraid of pursuing top-dollar free agents. The Blue Jays pursued Shohei Ohtani and were linked to Juan Soto. The Blue Jays opened up the checkbook to give Vladimir Guerrero Jr. a $500 million deal before he even got to free agency.
Tucker is this year’s big name, and the Blue Jays have been linked to him after making a run to the World Series. On Monday, The Athletic’s Jim Bowden took it one step forward and said if he had to pick a favorite right now for Tucker, it would be the Blue Jays.
“I think it’s going to be very interesting, but in terms of teams where he fits, I mean, he fits with the Blue Jays,” Bowden said on the “Foul Territory” podcast. “Put him in right field, you know, he fits exactly what they like: 30 homers, 30 steals, plus defense, plus runner, plus arm. Doesn’t have to be the face of the franchise. That’s Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. I think it’s a really good fit, and I hear that they’re really interested in him.”
“I think he fits with the Yankees. … The Dodgers, they’ve got $80 million coming off the books. … At the end of the day, Blue Jays, Yankees, Dodgers are the best fits, and I think if you had to pick a favorite right now, it’s probably Toronto.”
That’s something right there. Bowden is a former general manager and a plugged-in insider around the league. If he thinks the Blue Jays are the favorite, that’s newsworthy.
