Buster Posey is surrounding himself with plenty of familiar faces, adding two former teammates as special advisers to the San Francisco Giants baseball operations department on Friday.

Curt Casali, Posey’s backup catcher in 2021, was hired as a special adviser along with Javier Lopez, a former reliever and member of the dynasty era’s Core Four, the team announced.

Additionally, Paul Bien was promoted from vice president to assistant general manager in baseball analytics. Bien, 39, has been with the Giants since 2012 and spent the past four years in his vice president role. He will now have a larger role alongside general manager Zack Minasian in applying analytical research in evaluating potential player acquisitions.

Since Lopez’s final season in 2016, he has been around the Giants primarily as a part-time color commentator for NBC Sports Bay Area, filling in for Mike Krukow. His new role doesn’t necessarily mean he won’t be back in the booth again.

Lopez nixed the idea of joining the team as a pitching coach – the full-time grind wouldn’t fit with Lopez’s family obligations in Atlanta – but he joined Posey and other Giants executives at the general manager’s meetings in Las Vegas last month.

Casali last played for the Giants in 2024, the final season of an 11-year career in which he also caught for the Tampa Bay Rays, Cincinnati Reds and Seattle Mariners.

Posey’s circle of advisers expands to eight, most with strong Giants ties, including former Giants managers Bruce Bochy and Dusty Baker; John Barr, the longtime scout who scouted Posey; former GM Bobby Evans; former bench coach Ron Wotus; Casali and Lopez, and Jeff Berry, Posey’s former agent.
