“We’re trying to play a brand of basketball where things can be interchangeable.”
With the arrival of Mackenzie Holmes, the Geelong Venom now have one of the WNBL’s most potent front-courts.
Holmes, fresh off a solid WNBA season with Seattle, will join fellow US star Alissa Pili, who most recently played with the LA Sparks, in Chris Lucas’ imposing frontline during the 2025-26 campaign.
In a recent interview with CODE Sports, Indiana University alum Holmes, who was a 2023 First-Team All-American, explained how their team’s versatility and competitiveness will pose issues for rival teams.
“Honestly, I hate losing more than I love winning, so I think (I’m) just somebody that can bring great energy every single day,” Holmes said to CODE Sports.

“I think we’re trying to play a brand of basketball where things can be interchangeable.
“Whether it’s four, whether it’s five (position), you know, Pili and I are just trying to get to know each other, play off of each other, and know that we both have strength in the post and on the perimeter and just capitalising off of that.”
The Venom’s Round 1 fixture with Sydney tips off at 7pm AEDT, live on ESPN.
