The M’s edged out a team that many in the Pacific Northwest loathe: the Oklahoma City Thunder (formerly the Seattle SuperSonics), who checked in at No. 2. The only other MLB team to make the top 10 was the No. 4 Toronto Blue Jays, the team that ousted Seattle from the playoffs in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series.
Cal Raleigh – fondly known as the Big Dumper – figures to have played a major role in the Mariners leading Google search trends in the United States with historic power season. The switch-hitting catcher slugged 60 home runs, an MLB record for catchers and switch-hitters, and fell just two shy of tying Aaron Judge’s AL record.
Raleigh was also at the center of a highly debated race for the AL MVP with Judge, which he ultimately finished as the runner-up in.
On top of Raleigh’s historic year, the Mariners won their first AL West title and reached the ALCS for the first time in 24 years. They also made two of the biggest trade deadline moves, acquiring Josh Naylor and Eugenio Suárez.
