Alomar, 56, a 12-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove winner, opened the press conference in a low but determined voice:
“I just received a cancer diagnosis, and I know the road ahead is going to be difficult. But I want everyone to know that I am not giving up. I will fight, and I want everyone to continue to support my family and those going through similar challenges.”

During the press conference, Alomar choked up several times, sharing the complex emotions he felt when facing this devastating disease: fear, anxiety, but also determination and gratitude.
Roberto Alomar is a Toronto Blue Jays icon and one of the greatest Latin players in MLB history. With 2,100 hits, 210 home runs, and a key role in the Blue Jays’ 1992 and 1993 World Series victories, he was not only a great player but also an inspiration to generations of athletes.
But today, Alomar proved that courage is not only present on the field. In front of more than 100 reporters, colleagues and fans in attendance, he said:
“The field has taught me patience, mental strength and determination. I will bring all those lessons to this battle.”
In the immediate aftermath of Alomar’s announcement, social media exploded with thousands of messages of support from fans, current players, former teammates, and other MLB legends.
José Bautista shared: “Roberto is a warrior in every way. We will always be with him.”

Former teammate Devon White wrote: “He has inspired millions. Now, we will pass on all our love and support to Roberto.”
The Blue Jays leadership was also quick to announce that they will support Alomar every step of the way, from his medical treatment to his community involvement, ensuring that their legend never has to fight alone.
Alomar ended the press conference with a message for all:
“Cancer doesn’t define who is strong or weak. It challenges us all. But I believe that with love, support, and determination, we can overcome. I will fight for myself, for my family, and for everyone who faces this disease.”
Roberto Alomar is not just a name on the field; he is also a symbol of strength, inspiration, and perseverance. When news of his illness was announced, the baseball world was silent, but also filled with hope and gratitude for his uncompromising fighting spirit.
In the coming days, fans, teammates, and the sports community will stand by Alomar, witnessing another battle – off the field – but one that is inspiring and proud.
