The Toronto Blue Jays had a heartbreaking finish to their 2025 season. After going 94-68 in the regular season, winning the American League pennant and being up 3-2 in the World Series, the Blue Jays fell to the Los Angeles Dodgers in seven games in the Fall Classic to put an end to their incredible run.
Since the offseason began, Toronto has not been shy about spending money for big-name free agents. The Blue Jays signed starting pitcher Dylan Cease to a seven-year, $210 million contract and added another starter in Cody Ponce on a $30 million deal.
With this amount of money already allocated elsewhere, Blue Jays fans are left wondering if Toronto still has the funds to bring back star shortstop Bo Bichette next year.
Bichette has had a fantastic career with the Blue Jays since Toronto selected him in the second round of the 2016Â MLBÂ Draft. In seven major-league seasons, Bichette has hit .294 with 111 home runs and 437 RBIs. In 2025, the 27-year-old had one of the best seasons of his career, batting .311 with an .840 OPS, 18 long balls and 94 RBIs.
Bichette is a free agent after his three-year contract expired at the end of last season. While he has many suitors around the league, Bichette has stated he wants to stay with Toronto.
“I said I’ve wanted to be here from the beginning,” he said after the Blue Jays lost Game 7 of the World Series.
On Wednesday, CBS Sports reporter Matt Snyder wrote that the Blue Jays still have room for the potentially massive contract that Bichette will require to return to Toronto. Despite Cease’s $210 million deal, the Blue Jays can still retain their longtime shortstop.
“Even if it seems tricky, there’s room to add Bichette,” Snyder said. “The bottom line here is these pitching moves don’t prevent the Blue Jays from bringing Bichette back.”
This is good news for Bichette and Blue Jays fans who are hoping they will see their two-time All-Star shortstop in Toronto in 2026.
